Actually, it’s strange that it took so long. Mercedes AMG department has almost exclusively given us some of the absolute most fun performance cars of our time. Cars built with performance and driving pleasure as a focus. But it would take until 2014 before we got a real AMG variant of an A-class. 2014 was the year when Mercedes launched the W176 iteration of the A-class as the A45. And not entirely unexpectedly, Mercedes-AMG moved the finishing line for its competitors in the segment. The version that followed, the W177 followed the same tradition but now to new levels. This time also got this car. A35. With its 306hp, this is truly Mercedes-AMG at its best. The A35, which is seen as the ‘little brother’, delivers 306hp… in an A-class. In addition, the power is delivered to all four wheels to cement this AMG as the king of the hot-hatch segment.

This example is from 2022 but has been used very sparingly by its only user. Around 8090 km is indicated on the meter and this is really something that is reflected in the car’s condition. The exterior has a rather healthy new attitude in metallic black with black 19" rims. At the lower edge of the front you find ‘canards’ that help with the air control around the car and above the tailgate there is a generous wing that together forms what Mercedes themselves call AMG’s Aero Package. Elements that give a sober A-class a pretty good dose of attitude.

The inside is the same fine balance between Mercedes class and sportiness. The driver’s environment is dominated by a large display that is divided over two surfaces. Directly in front of the driver is a display that acts as an instrument cluster but is fully configurable and the center display is primarily intended for infotainment but also handles some of the car’s dynamic functions. All under the system name MBUX which is today one of the market’s leading systems in the automotive world. Otherwise, the interior is divided into black leather and alcantara with red stitching throughout and above, a large panoramic roof that drenches the cabin in sunlight.
