What the G-Class has been for Mercedes, the Defender has been for Land Rover. A model that is largely synonymous with the brand. Models that have stuck to their purpose since the start. When Land Rover’s Series 3 went out of style in 1983, we were first introduced to the model name Defender. The car took over the baton from the Series 3 as the absolute optimal off-roader. Something that was put to the test time and time again in now legendary events such as the Camel Trophy where the cars were forced to tackle some of the world’s absolute most difficult terrain situations. Between 1983 and 2016, the Defender underwent a series of iterations and updates, but the overall design remained largely unchanged. 2016 was also the last year that the classic Defender was produced before 2020 when the L663 generation took over.
This L663 Defender is from 2023 and remains with its first user. The car is specified in a level of equipment that Land Rover calls ‘Defender X’. A variant that is equipped to be as capable off-road as possible. This is done with the help of, among other things, more advanced driving modes and an active differential. The car’s rather angry exterior is lined with small model details such as the orange towing eyes at the rear and the tinted taillights. Otherwise, the exterior is specified in Carpathian Grey together with inserts in black over the front, hood and roof. 20" black rims house brakes with red calipers and are shod in off-road tires from BF Goodrich. The inside offers a leather interior in brown and black with wood inserts in the center console. The dashboard is dominated by a media display that handles both multimedia as well as many of the car’s driving modes and functions.
The L663 generation was a leap forward for the Defender. What was previously a tool for tackling terrain is now much more. They have succeeded in creating a car that seamlessly combines its off-road capabilities with being more comfortable and more adapted to everyday use.
