The AC Cobra. Perhaps the most American thing you can imagine in the sports car world. And even then, the foundation is not American. It started back in the 50s when Carroll Shelby had decided to build his own car to be able to compete against Ferrari and Porsche in endurance races. And the now legendary chicken farmer from Texas adhered to the most American and simple of techniques. As little car as possible and as much engine as possible. Something that of course proved to be extremely successful. The base was taken from AC in Great Britain and the V8 engine was obtained from Ford. The car’s great success on the track led to street cars and also models with even more power and engine capacity. But far from everyone could actually handle the car, which was notoriously extremely difficult to drive and moody in its character. That is probably also why it is a model that has always attracted and amazed people.
The original was made in a mere 998 copies and after production ended, many have tried to recreate the car. Few succeed. Virtually none to this level. Built in fiberglass with the help of Autofab and with a chassis that based its suspension on a Corvette C4, this AC Cobra imitates the original enormously well. Both visually and in its spirit. Under the hood is the powertrain from a 2017 Mustang. 5 liter V8 connected to a 6-speed manual transmission that delivers 500hp of pure violence to the rear wheels and produces a sound that is unparalleled as a byproduct.
The exterior is dressed in Porsche’s ‘Carbon Steal Grey’ color with two model-typical stripes running across the car in silver. The low silhouette is dominated by its sidepipes and its roll-over arches behind the driver and passenger. Small details such as the lifting points in the front and rear of the car are examples of details that are lifted from the original.
It truly is a work of art on four wheels. In every detail. The interior is upholstered in black leather and is sparing with options. The dashboard is dominated by a series of gauges and tactile buttons to manage the car’s basic functions. In front of the passenger, however, there are controls to control the car’s sound system, which is served via Cerwin Vega. But it’s the driving experience we’re here for. And what an experience it is, something that is almost unparalleled. Voted Sweden’s finest car in renound events and multiple award winner.
